… saccharine, remaining grounded in the brutality of war despite its slightly hazy, dreamy approach. And yet, it is rarely mentioned among the best films of all time. I’m unsure why.

You have brought it all flooding back Reece. Great piece on a great film. It can only be the homoerotic undercurrents which are not to everyone's taste in a WW2 Japanese Death Camp that deride it of great film status.
