I am not an American I am an Englishman and yet I was truly shocked at the scenes I witnessed on a television screen and on other devices at the storming of the Capitol building on January 6th 2021 by Trump supporters, who had been provoked and encouraged by the words of Donald Trump that day. These people were not protestors they were violent insurrectionists and terrorists. They were intent on violence both to the symbols of democracy and — far more concerning — to the people who were working inside and outside the building and the political representatives of American democracy.
We saw the thin blue line stand and try and stop the onslaught and from what I have been hearing that thin blue line had been made very thin on the day — deliberately. The testimonies given on Tuesday were harrowing. And they should concern every American citizen and anyone who knows how fragile democracy truly is. It came down to a few good men wearing a blue uniform. Not the khaki of a hundred-thousand men in Vietnam or Iraq or Afghanistan but a handful of really decent human beings who put their own lives on the line to safeguard the democracy of everyone who votes in America. And for this act of courage above and beyond the call of duty they are smeared…
