Suicide Squad (2021)

Suicide Starfish is of course more appropriate but it doesnt really work for the pun I was trying. But hey don’t knock a guy for trying unless he is the director of ‘Suicide Squad’. As you know this is the second version. I vaguely remember the first which I did go to the cinema to see. Don’t remember that much either, except the character of Colonel Flag played perfectly by Joel Kinnerman.

There is more in the second film — more killings, more explosions, more action and more quirkyness — is that even a word? — butI have to say I shall remember this version, but, for all the wrong reasons. More is not necessarily a bad thing except when it comes to levels of quirkyness. When you’ve seen one weird or quirky character another ten just becomes too derivative and meaningless. Quirky is better if it is not over produced. It is then that it loses its specialness — is that even a word? — its (sorry to repeat myself) quirkyness (?) and becomes the norm.

But that’s just a minor issue for me. Lets go with my biggest issue about the film, Suicide Squad (2021). SPOILER ALERT.

The intergalactic — trapped in a Nazi-built (Hellboy?) concrete prison — creature being experimented upon by a mad scientist — Dr Who? — in a place which can only be a thinly-veiled — and comical — rendition of a neoliberals…
