So on Thursday 6th May the new new Labour Party — under new new management — had its first electoral test under Sir Keir Starmer. These were local council elections, Mayoral elections, a by-election in Hartlepool and Scottish and Welsh Parliamentary elections. The local elections in England were an unmitigated disaster for Starmer and the Labour Party. The Party lost Hartlepool to a Tory candidate which has never happened until now.

The Labour candidate for Hartlepool had already been mired in controversy prior to this election but the main reason for the defeat was that you cannot have a candidate who was a Remainer to run in a seat that voted overwhelmingly for Brexit. This was utter madness.

As it was this area — the once titled ‘Red Wall’ of Labour seats — which was already disaffected with Labour and was now ready to finally make the move across the political divide because of the disastrous 2nd Referendum policy change.
