I could not agree more with you Rupert.
There was not as yet any working class consciousness but there certainly was a proletariat who threw themselves over the top for King and Country.
Even this slaughter precipitated no revolt or revolution in England just the memory of sacrifice which fed into the Christian ethos underpinning and motivating the expansion of the British Empire.
And the same jingoistic nationalistic ethos which caused Brexit and I have to say the fascist government we have now abolishing freedoms in this country. !00 years later.
And still no revolution.
