Hey David
Great response mate. I like your style. A man after my own heart.
I too felt the resonances between The Third Man and To Serve Man. But the modern political resonance I had to leave aside for the purpose of my piece(s) which was to look at the idea of the ‘perfect’ creation and the ‘perfect’ reveal. I was only wishing to entertain.
I felt the time for heavy political commentary was not right. I have already put a few of my thoughts on Ukraine and the Russian invasion in writing.
Your response contains some of the points I was conscious of in writing the pieces. It is cleverly put together.
As The Third Man takes place the Iron Curtain descends upon Europe and the Cold War is born from the glorious and moral defeat of fascism in Nazi Germany by the Allied powers who were able to work together against a common enemy. And today that Cold War is reborn. Version 2.0
That these glorious Allied powers and the others on the UN are not able to work together to defeat one of mankind's greatest enemies — War — is an utter dismal and abysmal failure.
And the monologue by Harry Lime which I quote is so very true. Except now Switzerland is sending arms to Ukraine to be used against Russian forces. And The Nazis had built the first jet fighters and those V2 rockets which were being prepared to hit America, eventually. The Man In The High Castle takes that on brilliantly as I am sure you know. Too late to win the real war but more evidence for Harry’s statement. (Orson Welles’s own addition)
So deep resonances indeed.
Thank you for your response, David.
Food for thought is always welcome. As the Kanamit might say.
