Comedy in Action Films: Be Serious And Not Indulge In Racist Caricature.
I, like many many, have recently watched ‘The Tomorrow War’ and did thoroughly enjoy most of the film although, I have written on medium.com about its highly derivative story and content. Whether that bothers the viewer is up to them, but for me, it does affect the reception of any piece of artwork whether highbrow or lowbrow. The film was very popular. But of course not everything that is popular is necessarily good and should be allowed a free critique-less ride. Just ask American voters who have finally rid the world — although only temporarily it seems — of the arch-joker himself.
There was one thing which did supremely annoy me because of its falseness and its fake ness— back to Trump again — which did grate upon me even during the film, which had plenty of action to deflect my annoyance but still could not, hence my piece. It was the comedy ‘routine’ provided by Sam Richardson as ‘Charlie’. And I mean ‘routine’. It was a performance seperate to the film.
And it was a truncated comedy routine bordering upon caricature. Who exactly was it intended for? I for one did not find it funny. Nobody can be that stupid. Well only a certain person whose name I have mentioned already. I found him annoying and wholly unneccesary to plot or story. Every other character had their role and their reason for…
